Gutters: The Most-Skipped Maintenance Item That Protects Your Roof

Nobody gets excited about gutters. They're the part of the exterior you only notice when they're overflowing during a downpour or dangling after an ice storm. But of everything hanging on the edge of a house, gutters are the component most directly responsible for whether the roof edge, the fascia, the siding, and the basement stay dry.

What gutters actually do

Every inch of rain that hits a 2,000 square foot roof produces roughly 1,200 gallons of runoff. Gutters catch it at the eave, carry it to the downspouts, and dump it away from the foundation. When that system works, the roof edge dries out between storms, the fascia stays sound, and the soil against the basement wall stays stable.

When it doesn't work, water goes everywhere it shouldn't — behind the fascia, under the first course of shingles, down the siding, and into the soil right next to the foundation. Austin's clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry, which is exactly the movement basement walls don't want.

Why Austin is hard on gutters

Wind-driven rain. In winter, heat from the attic melts snow on the upper roof. The meltwater runs down to the cold eave and refreezes. If the gutter is full of leaves and frozen solid, the ice builds up faster, backs up under the shingles, and leaks into the wall. Ice-and-water shield helps, but a clean, properly sloped gutter is the first defense.

Spring storms. Straight-line wind loads gutters with debris and can pull them from the fascia. Hail dents aluminum — and those dents are also your first clue that the roof may have taken hail.

Big trees. Neighborhoods like Tarrytown, Zilker, and the older parts of Kyle and Mission have mature oaks and maples that drop seeds in spring and leaves in fall. A gutter under an oak fills twice a year, minimum.

Humid summers. Standing water in a clogged gutter breeds mosquitoes and rots the wood behind it.

The twice-a-year routine

1. Clean them. Spring after the seed drop, fall after the leaves. Scoop the debris, flush with a hose from the end away from the downspout, and watch the water flow.

2. Check the slope. Water should move toward the downspout without pooling. A gutter that holds water is sagging or pitched wrong.

3. Check the hangers. Push up gently on the gutter every few feet. Loose hangers let it pull away from the fascia in the next ice storm.

4. Flush the downspouts. If water backs up, the elbow is clogged. A plumber's snake or a strong hose usually clears it.

5. Look at the fascia. Peeling paint, soft wood, or dark staining behind the gutter means water's been getting behind it.

6. Extend the downspouts. Water should discharge at least four to six feet from the foundation. Splash blocks and extensions are cheap; foundation repair is not.

What new gutters cost in the metro

Seamless aluminum gutters, the standard for Austin homes, typically run $8–$15 per linear foot installed, including downspouts and hangers. A typical home needs 120–200 linear feet. Larger 6-inch gutters (better for steep roofs and heavy downpours), half-round styles, and copper cost more. Gutter guards add to the price and reduce, but don't eliminate, the cleaning.

If the fascia behind the gutter is rotten, it has to be replaced first. We check for that on every gutter job because hanging new gutters on rotten wood wastes your money.

Gutters and a new roof

If you're getting a roof replacement, it's the right time to look at the gutters. Drip edge, gutter apron, and gutter placement all work together at the eave, and it's cheaper to do it once. Ask for it as a line item on the estimate so you can see the cost separately.

Gutter guards: worth it?

Sometimes. Micro-mesh guards under mature trees can cut cleaning from twice a year to once every couple of years. Cheap foam and brush inserts often make things worse by trapping debris. If you're considering guards, ask what tree cover you have and how the guards handle heavy rain — some styles shed water right over the edge in a downpour.

Small line, big consequences

A gutter cleaning takes an afternoon. A sagging section is a modest repair. Fascia replacement, an ice-dam leak into the wall, or a foundation crack from years of runoff against the wall costs many times more. It's the one maintenance item that consistently gets skipped and consistently comes back to bite.
